Real Women Have Curves

I was cleaning up my files on the computer and discovered quite a few of them that were intended to be blogs. So I decided to quickly add them in without further ado.

Real Women have Curves

That was the title of the movie we, i.e. my friends Tushara, Gillian and Chammi and I saw yesterday. It was about an 18 year old Spanish (?) ‘chubby’ girl living in USA facing cultural, economic and ‘body beautiful’ dilemmas.

It was nice and some parts of it were hilarious.

Her mother called her ‘fatty’ and was constantly finding fault with her. The ladies of the family were working in a factory which Ana calls the ‘sweat shop’. It is so hot inside because the sisters fear the using of fans would cause dust to settle on the dresses which they were turning out. At some point Ana snaps and takes off her blouse and then her jeans in spite of her mother’s horrified protests. She is defiantly joined by the rest of the ‘staff’ who then strip down to their underwear to compare sizes and cellulite.

St Anthony is hung upside down cos he has failed to produce a husband for the elder sister, while Baby Jesus is unceremoniously plucked out of St Anthony’s arms in the hope that being separated would grant the mothers wishes for a good husband for Ana.

Another hilarious part was where the mother fears that she is pregnant despite her age and the doctors prognosis - cos’ after all, a ‘woman knows these things’! She didn’t know too much about menopause tho! It was a really good movie holding quite a few giggles in it.

16th March 2005 - yup that's right 2005!
